About The Compton Arts Project
The Compton Arts Project is an artist-led, community-based effort developed by Sēpia Artist Collective (Sēpia LLC).
The Compton Arts Project is an unbrella term for the collaborative of Compton Stakeholders with the aim of centering arts and culture to build community and energize the tourism economy in Compton.
Four years in the making, the ambitious enterprise is a partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Compton., Arts Organizations, and Compton Business, Education, and Civic leaders.
The Compton Arts Project is collaborative in its approach to centering arts and culture in the City of Compton. It produces public art and multidisciplinary events, exhibitions, panels, and workshops recognizing Compton’s impact on arts and culture in the region and worldwide.
Amid the pandemic, The Compton Arts Project has produced virtual events and looks forward to in-person activities soon. So far, we have had two Reading the City panel discussions featuring Compton poets and other visual artists. Upcoming Reading the City events will focus on muralists, hip-hop artists, and actors.
The Compton Arts Project seeks to implement five Goals and objectives around advocacy, preservation, and promotion of the arts to strengthen the City of Compton. They are:
1) center arts and culture in the City through advocacy and community engagement;
2) develop a Culture District and an arts and culture community center in the City;
3) highlight and support the brilliance of Compton artists and their contributions;
4) encourage local businesses to embrace arts, and;
5) demonstrate the value of art as an economic engine that anchors communities.
